With the NHS having recently celebrated its 70th Birthday, the London North West University Health Care held their 3rd Open Day, at Northwick Park Hospital on the 7th July 2018.
The day featured local entertainment, as well as a vast array of stalls with information about the various services available at both Northwick Park, and St Marks Hospitals.
Northwick Park is located in North West London, and is home to the hospital of the same name. It is also home to Radio Harrow. Visitors to the Open Day were invited down to the broadcasting studios, located in the Hospital, from where the radio station broadcasts every day.

Radio Harrow marked the third Local Radio Day with a special day of shows ahead of the Bank Holiday Weekend. With programming from the studios, and out in the community, the station joined stations up and down the country in celebrating Proper Local Radio, on a day which is now a firm fixture in the Radio Harrow calendar.

David Reece and Wendy Sherer served up breakfast, the radio show variant, from 8am from studios in Northwick Park, with an exclusive interview with the new Mayor of Harrow, Kareema Kairul, who began her term in office the previous day.
During the morning, presenters Nick Edwards, and Shrey Puranik went on a ‘bus tour’ in the locality, checking in with the studio team at regular intervals.

It wouldn’t be Local Radio without local sports, and Noah Abrahams from the Sports Show went on an exclusive behind the scenes tour of The Vale, the home of Wealdstone FC:
Nick and Shrey, fresh from their adventures in Harrow, then took over the reigns at drive, with a special interview with the Heath Robinson Museum ahead of a new exhibition opening at the Museum.
At 7pm, Anna Trevers broadcast a special edition of The Basement Tapes, with the show being made especially for Local Radio Day!

For the third consecutive year, Radio Harrow will be joining radio stations across the country on Friday 25th May 2018 and celebrating Local Radio Day with a special day of programming.
Launched in 2016 by the UKRD, Local Radio Day is a national event, involving radio stations from across the UK, aimed at undertaking events, tours and community activities all focussed on representing the unique nature of “proper local radio” and the impact it has within the communities it serves.
Founded in April 2015, Radio Harrow has been at the heart of activity in Harrow, with live outside broadcasts, specialist programming, in-studio guests, as well as being a constant presence in the community. Run and led by volunteers, with live shows every day of the week, the radio station recently celebrated its third birthday.
Join David Reece & Wendy Sherer for a special Radio Harrow Breakfast Show and get your Friday off to the perfect start at 8am. The duo will be joined in the studio by the Mayor of Harrow from 9am, and will also be checking in with Harrow at various points during the morning. The fun continues into the afternoon, with shows from across the Borough.
During the day, we’ll be checking in with some of Harrow’s most well known and well loved places. A special walking tour will air in the afternoon, covering famous locations across the borough.
As part of the on air programming, the first hour of the Radio Harrow Roadshow will be broadcast live from Northwick Park Hospital Social Club at 6pm. Later on in the evening, the radio station’s very own House Band, The Volunteers, will be playing at the event, along with a DJ set from Steve Pinchen.

For the 4th consecutive year, Radio Harrow were present at the annual Wheelbarrow Race in Pinner. The day, which featured on 22nd April 2018, was held as part of the annual St. George’s Day celebrations. With the sun shining across North West London, the day featured campanologists, a great 50’s and 60’s performance from Simply Grey, and the infamous wheelbarrow race. Costume-clad wheelbarrow custodians raced each other down the High Street.

Getting underway at midday, the first part of the day featured live music from Simply Gray, as well as the annual renewal of the vows for the local Scouts and Guides.

Ahead of the famous Wheelbarrow Race at 3pm, there was a parade of the competing teams, with all contestants and their wheelbarrows walking down the high street. The race itself was broadcast live on Radio Harrow, with various commentary teams situated across the race track.

Radio Harrow’s David Reece was at the finish line keeping listeners and members of the spectating public informed as the competing teams completed the race. The winning team were Carbos, and the team with the best costume, were ‘The Things’, who received their awards from the Mayor of Harrow, and boxing superstar, Elliot Matthews respectively.

Based in the Borough, and founded by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in our local area, Harrow Foodbank has distribution centres in South Harrow, and Wealdstone. The foodbank was founded in 2013, and has provided foodbank services for over 4 years. You can find out how to donate via their website.

During the Christmas period, Harrow Foodbank’s last Distributions will be at Holy Trinity Church, Wealdstone, High Street on Tuesday 19th December, then St Paul’s Church, Corbins Lane, South Harrow, on Wednesday 20th December and then Holy Trinity Church on Friday 22nd December – all from 1 pm to 3 pm.
After the above dates the Foodbank will be closed until Wednesday 3rd January 2018 when Distributions will be as normal: that is on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 pm to 3 pm – St Paul’s Church on Wednesday and Holy Trinity Church on Fridays and Tuesdays.
The annual Harrow Christmas Party was conducted in style during the last weekend of November, with a live extravaganza in the heart of Harrow Town Centre. From the Saturday morning, the Town Centre saw a busy rush of activity with a stage being set up outside the Royal Oak pub ahead of the afternoon of festivities and entertainment.

The afternoon featured live performances from Harrow Arts Centre, Radio Harrow’s very own House Band, ‘The Volunteers’, the Dhol Drummers, and dance group, Kideology.
Special guest Sajan Shah from BBC’s The Apprentice took part in the celebrations, which culminated with the switching on of the Christmas Lights in the Town Centre followed by a fireworks display.

As part of the August Bank Holiday weekend, Radio Harrow were present at the 2017 Headstone Village Show at Headstone Manor, providing a PA service to the event with music, as well as commentating on the proceedings of the day with interviews with participants. (more…)
As part of National Carers Week, Radio Harrow was joined by Emma Cooper from Harrow Mencap alongside two carers, Kevin and Chelsea to discuss the roles of carers and ways of coping with caring.
As well as being a Project Coordinator with Harrow Mencap, Emma is also a carer, looking after her son who has disabilities. Kevin and Chelsea spoke at length about the challenges they face on a daily basis as carers.
Kevin, looks after his mother-in-law who is suffering from dementia. During the conversation, Kevin gives a frank account of the stress that carers are under. He also talks about different things which help to cope with this and revealed how certain music helps to keep his mother settled and her memories alive.
There are more than 25,000 unpaid carers in Harrow. It is thought that a large number of people are taking the role of carer on without realising that they could be classified as an unpaid carer. During the discussion Emma told Gary Walker about how common it is for someone who initially gradually starts helping someone out from time to time and then ends up in a full time caring position without realising it.
This interview was part of National Carers Week, a week dedicated to getting the recognition for carers who provide services valued at more than 25 billion pounds a year without pay. You can find out more about the week here.

With the June sun shining brightly across Harrow, Radio Harrow joined St Luke’s Hospice for their annual Family Fun Day at the Harrow Masonic Centre.
Based in Harrow and Brent, St Luke’s Hospice looks after people whose illnesses are no longer curable. The organisation works in partnership with, and provides education and support to GP’s and community teams to ensure that the patients receive the highest levels of care, regardless of the setting in which they find themselves in.

The event featured many attractions for all members of the family, with entertainment ranging from the dodgum cars to the popular tombola. Radio Harrow provided a PA service with the team playing music, and speaking with members of the organisation during the day, which also featured a special prize giving ceremony and speeches from the Mayor of Harrow, Margaret Davine.
