Ahead of the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) Open Day on the 9th July, Dame Jacqueline Doherty the Chief Executive Officer joined Radio Harrow to tell us more about the event.
The London North West Healthcare Trust consists of four hospitals: Ealing, Central Middlesex, Northwick Park and St. Mark’s. The Trust also includes several other healthcare community services that run throughout the local area. On Saturday 9th July the Trust will be opening the doors and inviting the public to come and see the services have to offer.
Taking place at Northwick Park Hospital from 11am-2.30pm, the day will include lots of family friendly activities, stalls, the opportunity to take a tour of the hospital and discover some of the modern technology helping surgeons in the hospital today.
Radio Harrow will also be broadcasting live from the event on the 4th Floor near the entrance of the hospital. To find out more about the Open Day and see a full programme head to the LNWH NHS Trust website.
Dame Jacqueline joined the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust as Chief Executive in April 2015. In 2004 Jacqueline was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire for services to nursing and the NHS.

On Friday 15th July, the Borough Commander from the Harrow Metropolitan Police Service will join the Radio Harrow Breakfast Show to answer questions from the people of Harrow.
Simon Ovens was appointed the Borough Commander of Harrow in 2013. He has been committed to cutting crime, particularly burglary, robbery and anti-social behaviour and to offer a good service to the community. Also joining the Borough Commander, will be Vickie Brownlee, an Inspector on the Safer Neighbourhoods scheme.
Simon and Vickie will be answering questions around confidence in policing and community engagement. If you’ve got any questions or concerns about safety in the Borough that you’d like to raise, please do send them in, preferably in advance of the interview.

Radio Harrow’s ’60 Days of Summer’ returned for a second year running. For 60 days from the 1st July to the 29th August, we posted a picture a day that captured summertime in and around Harrow.
Following on from the success of last year, we wanted to share and celebrate the beauty of the local area. With the help of budding photographers from across the area, we’ve had some stunning pictures sent to us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #RH60DaysofSummer
One lucky image will also be used to decorate our studio. Our volunteers will vote for their favourite image from a shortlist of the most popular posts to decide which one will grace our studio.

Harika Nimmala and Cherie from Brahma Kumaris Harrow talked with Radio Harrow’s Breakfast Show about the benefits of meditation.
They described why people should meditate and how it can benefit both physical and mental health. Harika and Cherie talked about their personal experiences, explaining the inner feelings and connections that they have felt through practicing meditation.
Whether on a train or listening to music, Harika and Cherie explained how meditation can be practiced in many different forms as a way of calming the mind and giving an ‘inner place of silence’.

Chris Walker is the Manager of a new women’s football club for residents based in Edgware. Edgware Town Ladies Football Club is open to women of all ages and skills living in Harrow, Brent and Edgware.
Chris joined the Radio Harrow breakfast show ahead of the club’s first ever league friendly. The club are still looking for players and members to join and in particular they are in need of coaches. If you are interested or want to find out more about joining, email secretary@edgwaretownfc.co.uk
Chris shared his thoughts on women in sport and discussed the need to get more women involved in sports. He described the great progress that has been made in women’s football and by women in general in the sporting world. Chris showcased a great passion for encouraging sporting opportunities for women in the area.

Rina Pattani, a volunteer at Arthritis Care UK, joined the Radio Harrow Breakfast Show to talk about the launch of a new Harrow based arthritis support group.
Rina has suffered from arthritis from a young age and knows what living with the illness is like. She spoke to host Gary Walker about how the illness affects people, why they need support and what types of support are on offer.
Rina has helped to form a new arthritis support group which is meeting for the first time at Northwick Park Hospital on Wednesday 8th June at 7pm. The event will feature a Q&A session with Rheumatology Consultant Dr Penn and his team.

Amongst the hustle and bustle of one of London’s busiest stations, 25 cyclists culminated the end of an epic 280-mile journey as part of the Colon Challenge 2016. A mini-festival was set-up outside Kings Cross Station to welcome the riders after their long journey. Radio Harrow broadcast live from the finish line to bring listeners all the action from the St Mark’s Hospital Foundation event.
The Colon Challenge is the St Mark’s Hospital Foundation’s largest event in the year. The challenge involves 25 cyclists embarking on a 280-mile long journey along a colon shaped route. The journey takes four days and each cyclist raises sponsorship to raise money for the St Mark’s Hospital Foundation.
The Foundation supports the research and development of treatment for Bowel Cancer. The Colon Challenge was originally organised by Paul Bouscarle, a bowel cancer patient at St Mark’s Hospital. 2016 marks St Mark’s Hospital Foundation’s 180th Anniversary Year.

Local Radio Day, founded by UK Radio Developments (UKRD) will see radio stations up and down the country participate by hosting a wide array of special programming.
Author David P Perlmutter joined the Radio Harrow Breakfast Show to talk about his new book ‘My Way Five About LIFE’, a book that tackles the topic of mental health in an innovative process. The book is the fifth instalment of David’s ‘My Way’ series.
David P Perlmutter is a successful, Amazon best-selling self-published author who began the ‘My Way’ series to help fellow indie authors with tips on how to self-publish and get their books to Number 1. Books 1-3 in the ‘My Way’ series focused purely on book marketing, but as David’s fan-base increased he decided to not only give some background into how authors got started on their own writing journeys but also give some samples of their work with links to their books.
Deciding to fit the genres to the book numbers, for example, ‘May the Fourth Be With You’, features sci-fi authors and was published to coincide with Star Wars Day. ‘My Way Five’ was always going to be about Life with authors and bloggers who write about life issues which has turned out to be predominantly mental health related.
‘My Way Five’ features a foreword by mental health charity SANE with a percentage of the proceeds from the book also going towards the charity. It was released to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week.
In his interview David talks about the brave contributors to his book who have opened their hearts to write, speak or blog about their own life experiences, which include stories of depression, anxiety, child abuse, addiction, domestic violence and much more. He also shared his views on social media.

Radio Harrow received a certificate of recognition from the outgoing Mayor of Harrow. On his final day as Mayor, Krishna Suresh invited Radio Harrow’s Programming Manager, Gary Walker to his office to present him with a certificate of recognition of the station’s services to the people of Harrow.
Upon receiving the certificate Gary Walker said he felt “honoured for Radio Harrow to be recognised for its commitment to providing a health and well-being service to the Borough”. He said “the certificate is also recognition for all the hard work and dedication of each of our volunteers who give so much of their time to the charity”.
Krishna Suresh was elected as a Labour councillor in 2010 and has been serving the Rayners Lane ward of Harrow. Before he became Mayor he was Deputy Mayor and sat on the Licensing Committee.
He is also the ethnic minority officer for the Harrow West branch of the Labour Party. As an active member of the community he was a Community Champion and worked closely with the Safer Neighbourhood Team.
The outgoing Mayor praised the volunteer organisations in the borough and described his most enjoyable parts of being Mayor in the interview.
Greek born singer/songwriter Héllena joined the Radio Harrow Breakfast Show to talk about the release of her latest single “Now I See”.
Héllena (formerly Helena Micy) decided to take a leap of faith and moved to the UK in 2011 to work with MTV award-winning producer Stereo Mike. Héllena made it into the MTV Unsigned Top 20 and gained 6 Gold awards on BEAT100 for “Don’t Change” and “Dream Big”.
In March 2013 she performed at SXSW festival and by early 2014 she reached No1 in ReverbNation’s Soul/R’N’B UK charts. She also appeared on Simon Lederman’s BBC London 94.9 FM show in 2014. Héllena is building a strong online fanbase and performing live with her band across the UK.
The now Harrow based singer/songwriter talked with Gary Walker about her music, her career and her life and played three of her songs including her latest single “Now I see” which was released in May 13th, 2016.

Author Mark Brookes joined Ben Felton on the ‘Freedom Friday’ show to talk about his upcoming play ‘POETS Day’.
Mark Brookes was accompanied by his son Archie, who stars in the play. Mark, a former electrician, originally wrote the play as a short story to give his teenage son, Archie, some fatherly advice regarding alcohol and drug abuse.
‘POETS Day’ is a cautionary tale that centres on what can go wrong when a youngster doesn’t have the right support, love and influences around them from an early age. Barnardo’s, the charity has partnered with the play so that 100% of the net profit from tickets will go to support the charity.
Alongside Archie Brookes, the play also stars Lee Barnett, an actor from the award winning children’s TV Show ‘The Slammer’. Lee will play the lead character, a middle-aged drunken bully whose life is still haunted by a tragic event.
