As part of National Carers Week, Radio Harrow was joined by Emma Cooper from Harrow Mencap alongside two carers, Kevin and Chelsea to discuss the roles of carers and ways of coping with caring.
As well as being a Project Coordinator with Harrow Mencap, Emma is also a carer, looking after her son who has disabilities. Kevin and Chelsea spoke at length about the challenges they face on a daily basis as carers.
Kevin, looks after his mother-in-law who is suffering from dementia. During the conversation, Kevin gives a frank account of the stress that carers are under. He also talks about different things which help to cope with this and revealed how certain music helps to keep his mother settled and her memories alive.
There are more than 25,000 unpaid carers in Harrow. It is thought that a large number of people are taking the role of carer on without realising that they could be classified as an unpaid carer. During the discussion Emma told Gary Walker about how common it is for someone who initially gradually starts helping someone out from time to time and then ends up in a full time caring position without realising it.
This interview was part of National Carers Week, a week dedicated to getting the recognition for carers who provide services valued at more than 25 billion pounds a year without pay. You can find out more about the week here.

On Thursday 18th May, Chan Vekaria will be joining Hansi on ‘The Mixed Masala Show‘ to share her tips for losing weight and describe how she went from a size 24 “Sumo” to a size 10. Chan is now, as she says a “fitter healthier happier version of me”.
Since losing 44kg naturally several years ago, Chan spent a lot of time learning about the importance of healthy eating and keeping fit, not only to lose weight but also to feel better emotionally. She says “losing weight has literally been like a new lease of life for me. So many people take their health for granted or they don’t prioritise taking time out to exercise regularly”.
She goes on to describe how obesity and the problems associated with it are common in the Asian community, “in the Asian community there is such a large population of people who suffer from diabetes and heart disease, which can be as a result of being overweight. This is why it is so important to learn about nutrition and fitness so that we can live a longer, healthier life as well as set a good example for our children.”
Ahead of coming on the show Chan said “I’m looking forward to sharing with Hansi some of the important changes I have made to my lifestyle in the hope that it will motivate and inspire others to do the same.”
You can listen to the full interview with Chan on Radio Harrow at 6pm on Thursday 18th May.

The annual St George’s Day festivities took place in Pinner High Street on Sunday 23rd April 2017. A flock of Radio Harrow volunteers were present at the event, providing music and public announcements for the community, with the entire day being broadcast live.
The event, which marked the first outside broadcast event for Radio Harrow when the station first launched in April 2015, featured numerous stands from various organisations, ranging from entertainment stalls to the St George’s Society. Local societies featured across the High Street, with many appearing on Radio Harrow during the day.
At 12:30, Brian Rose kicked off the day’s broadcast by interviewing The Rotary Club of Pinner who had organised the whole event.

Wednesday 19th April 2017 marks an important milestone for Radio Harrow, as the organisation celebrates its second birthday. Formed in April 2015 following the merger of Harrow Community Radio, Ward Radio and Radio Northwick Park, Radio Harrow has been broadcasting to the wider Harrow community, as well as continuing to maintain a patient befriending service, based out of studios in Northwick Park Hospital in North West London.
Over the last year, the station has been involved in numerous high profile events in the community, broadcasting live from various venues around the London Borough, and being at the heart of events in the local area. In May 2016, the station was awarded recognition of it’s services to the people by the then Mayor of Harrow, Krishna Suresh, 13 months after the station started broadcasting under it’s current name.
In October 2016, the station ran a marathon broadcast fundraiser, titled ‘Best Weekend Ever‘, with specialist programming and local events organised to raise funds for the station. Events in the local area included a Treadmill Challenge at the Harrow Leisure Centre, and live music at Harrow Arts Centre and the Northwick Park Hospital Social Club – where we even debuted our very own band called ‘The Volunteers’. On air, the station broadcast from early Saturday morning through till Sunday evening with a mix of live programming, and documentaries. The ‘Living with Diabetes’ show, which aired as part of the weekend long broadcast was awarded a Bronze Award for ‘Best Speech Package Program’ at the 2017 Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards.
As well as that we’ve been working hard to engage the local community and have featured several interviews with local charities and organisations across our programming over the past year.

Radio Northwick Park’s co-founder, Len Elman passed away on the 22nd February 2017 after a battle with kidney cancer. Radio Northwick Park is one of Radio Harrow’s former organisations. Len’s friend and co-founder of Radio Northwick Park, Marty Rose pays tribute to the man who helped to lay the foundations of our organisation.
“Len Elman and I first met in 1966 when I joined JYVS, the Jewish Youth Voluntary Service, Stanmore, Kenton and Edgware Branch. At that time we were helping the community in different ways by gardening, decorating and entertaining the residents in old people’s homes.
The members also ran Radio Edgware, a Hospital Radio Service at Edgware General Hospital. The service broadcast request shows, local news and star interviews to cheer up the patients and take their minds of their personal ailments for a short time each day.
Len and I got on straight away and formed a friendship that lasted over 50 years. After Radio Edgware, we went on to form (a different) Radio Harrow at Harrow Cottage Hospital.
Northwick Park Hospital was being built and both of us with others decided to make a bid through JYVS to run their hospital radio service. In 1971, through Len’s negotiating skills we successfully won the right to run Radio Northwick Park. We had 20 very enjoyable years running hospital radio together alongside all the volunteers.
In the early days we used to record shows in Len’s bedroom on a reel to reel tape recorder and take the shows to Radio Edgware and Radio Harrow. Things have improved over the years.
Len had various modes of transport from a bubble car to a Robin Reliant and black London Taxi. Motorbikes with side cars followed.
Len met his wife Barbara through the radio station and it was not long before love was in the air. They married in 1973 and have brought up two amazing sons who are they are hugely proud of.
After retiring they moved to Cork in Southern Ireland. Len & Barbara bought a campervan and spent their time driving to warmer climes in Spain and enjoying the weather and time together. Eventually, they decided to live permanently in Malaga in Spain.
As you can read from his modes of transport, Len was an extrovert yet never wanted any fuss. He was very likeable in whoever’s company he was in. I think that I can speak for everybody that knew him, that we never had a cross word in all the 50 years I had the privilege of calling him a very good friend. He will be sorely missed by his friends, family and everybody that knew him.”
Radio Harrow is delighted to have won a Bronze Award at the Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards 2017. The Bronze Award in the Best Speech Package category was awarded to Radio Harrow’s ‘Living with Diabetes’ show.
The special ‘Living with Diabetes‘ show was presented by Pierre Petrou, James Byers and Matt Pulford in conversation with Lis Warren from Diabetes UK. The show involved the Type 1 diabetes sufferers speaking openly about what it is like to live with the condition and reflecting on the types of treatment available. ‘Living with Diabetes’ aired as part of Radio Harrow’s ‘Best Weekend Ever‘, a special event in October which showcased the best of the stations’ health & well-being focused community radio.
The ‘Living with Diabetes’ package received positive feedback from the Hospital Broadcasting Association judges, in a statement they said, “the judges agreed this was a very interesting package with a commendable structure and treatment.”
Radio Harrow is also proud to have been shortlisted for three awards at the Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards 2017. We received nominations for three categories: Best Station Promotion, Best Speech Package and Best Programme with Multiple Presenters.
Our other shortlisted entries included the promotion of the Radio Harrow Panto ‘The Tweeting Beauty’ and the ‘Saturday Patients’ Hour’. Each nomination showcases the variety of broadcasting that Radio Harrow offers.
The ‘Saturday Patients’ Hour‘ team submitted an entry for the Best Programme with Multiple Presenters. Each week they showcase songs and stories from the patients at Northwick Park Hospital alongside features which promote health and wellbeing such as the ‘Saturday Cookbook’.
In stark contrast our entry for Best Promotion included our 2015 Christmas Radio Panto called ‘Tweeting Beauty‘ which was a light hearted and witty reflection of the playful pantomime. Entirely written and produced by our volunteers, the pantomime provided light relief and entertainment for patients in hospital and the local community.
The station’s Programme Manager, Gary Walker said, “it was an honour just to be nominated for these awards, and to win a Bronze is great recognition for the station’s health & well-being focused output”.

Skip Archimedes, also known as “The Miracle Man” spoke to Daniel Edward about the obstacles he has overcome on the Late Breakfast Show.
Skip has a hugely inspiring story about overcoming adversity. He was a competitive gymnast who overcame serious injuries, illnesses, a family break-up, obesity and depression to become a Gymnastic Champion. However, having reached his goal as a gymnast, a horrible accident during training left him with a broken back.
The doctors said he would never walk again, however, inspired by Bruce Lee Skip used the power of his mind to combat his afflictions. Miraculously, within 6 months he was able to start walking again. Within 18 months of his injury, Skip also returned to gymnastics and became an English Sports Acrobatics Champion.
Skip is running an exclusive event at Stanmore College from 7pm-9pm, tickets are £2 and can be booked by calling 020 8420 7200.

Ahead of their show at the Hayes Beck Theatre on Wednesday 8th March, Janine Johnson from ‘Back to Bacharach’ joined Gary Walker on Radio Harrow. The proceeds from the “Back to Bacharach” show will be donated to the charity Breast Cancer Now.
“Back to Bacharach” celebrates the magical music of Burt Bacharach, one of the most accomplished popular composers of the 20th Century. Together with Hal David, Burt Bacharach penned some of the most memorable and iconic hits that stand the test of time, including ‘Alfie’, ‘Walk on by’, ‘What’s New Pussycat’ and ‘Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head’.
This exciting tribute production recreating Burt Bacharach’s timeless hits and touring the UK is performed by 3 of the finest West End singers accompanied by a live 10 piece band.
For their upcoming show “Back to Bacharach” partnered with Breast
Cancer Now, the UK’s leading breast cancer charity. The charity supports nearly 450 of the world’s brightest researchers at more than 20 locations across the UK and Ireland. Together, they’re working to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage; it is working to try and stop the disease taking lives by 2050.
Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in the UK. Nearly 700,000
people living in the UK have experienced a diagnosis and one in eight women will face it in their lifetime. “Back to Bacharach” will be supporting the charity by donating £1 from each theatre ticket sold, and committing to raise a minimum of £10,000 by doing so.

The condition can affect people of all ages and in the UK alone there are around 6 million people living with tinnitus.
